Cochlear Implant Surgery
A cochlear implant surgery is a procedure that involves the placement of a small electronic device in the inner ear to provide sound signals directly to the auditory nerve. It is a treatment option for people with severe or profound hearing loss who cannot benefit from traditional hearing aids.
During the surgery, a surgeon makes a small incision behind the ear and places the implant device under the skin. A wire with electrodes is then inserted into the inner ear, where it stimulates the auditory nerve. The device is then connected to a speech processor worn externally on the head. The speech processor converts sound into electrical signals and sends them to the implant, which then sends them to the electrodes in the inner ear.
After the surgery, patients typically undergo a rehabilitation program to help them adjust to the new sounds and improve their speech perception. Cochlear implant surgery is generally considered safe and effective, and many people who receive cochlear implants are able to regain a significant amount of hearing function. However, it is important to note that not all individuals with hearing loss are candidates for cochlear implant surgery, and the decision to undergo the procedure should be made in consultation with an otolaryngologist and other healthcare professionals.
